The biological Insight

The electrophysiology of the eye is complex

The Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) is one of the most complex and highly polarized epithelial cell structures in the body. This specialized layer sustains photoreceptors and other retinal cells that enable vision.

Photoreceptors detect light and convert it into electrical signals, while bipolar and ganglion cells process and transmit those signals to the brain.

A healthy RPE maintains a strong transepithelial potential (TEP), an electrical polarity, which can weaken over time due to:

  • Oxidative stress
  • Inflammation
  • Aging RPE cells

i-Lumen Scientific has developed a bioelectric therapy intended to support the restoration of retinal electrophysiology.
